SpexWorlds! versus Spex+

What is the difference between Spex+ and the SpexWorld! programs?

Spex+ (currently SpexV2)

The Spex+ program has been a very popular resource in classrooms for many years; the program is loved by both pupils and teachers and remains a best seller here at aspexsoftware.

Spex+ is a wonderfully simple program which uses libraries of 2D hand drawn items of furniture, which are placed into the plan view of a rectangular room. The room can be displayed to show the plan view, 3D view and side view, and the items can be rotated by 90 degrees.

Spex+ includes a set of extra places to design, including ITRoom, Egyptian Tomb, Garden, Shop, Street, Moonbase, Play, Classroom and Pool.

SpexWorld! programs

In addition to Spex+ there are six individual new programs called:

SpexWorld! House

SpexWorld! School

SpexWorld! Town

SpexWorld! Lunar

SpexWorld! Tutankhamun

SpexWorld! Playground

The main difference is that each SpexWorld! program uses 3D technology rather than libraries of 2D drawings. All the items of furniture are 3D objects which enables the creation of virtual rather than static worlds. Rooms and furniture can be rotated smoothly and one walk around inside the virtual design using the arrow keys.

Should I choose Spex+ or one (or more) of the SpexWorld! programs?

Spex+ uses more simple technology to operate, but it is tried, tested, used and loved in school; it uses 2D vector drawings to represent the 'pseudo 3D' items of furniture on the screen. The program contains a wide selection of places, or environments to design and is a best seller.

Everybody in the class can use Spex. When demonstrating the program in classroom lessons or at exhibition we have always invited pupils who have never seen the program before, to demonstrate it to the teachers.

Spex+ is relatively small in terms of kb's and doesn't use a lot of computer power, it will work well on older slower computers.

SpexWorld! programs use more up to date technology. Each item of furniture is a 3D object and the program enables one to design 3D virtual worlds and these can contain single or multiple room floor plans. The concept is the same as Spex+ in that items of furniture have prices, one can display the plan, 3D and side views, the spreadsheet and graphs. But the program is generally more powerful and flexible. SpexWorlds! does require more RAM and computer power than Spex+; see the requirements below.
